Is It Time To Get Rid Of Those Old Popcorn Ceilings?

Gone are the days of the popcorn ceilings, that is unless you like the style. However, they are known to be major dust collectors, as well as they often get stained as well. If you have found it is time to update, here are some tips for you to follow:

  1. Get it checked for asbestos fibers-there is only a small amount of these ceilings that contain them but we advise you to use caution.
  2. Use a ceiling-texture scraper to remove the old finish-This tool is a handle, blade, and a platic bag. This will make for a much cleaner job.
  3. Apply three coats of joint compound-Apply two coats, then sand the surface before applying the third.
  4. Paint with drywall primer
  5. Paint with flat ceiling paint-It will hide imperfections better than a glossy paint
  6. For the easiest texture, use the "knockdown" finish-Thin your joint compound with water and apply it to the ceiling with a medium-nap paint roller. Once the compound is almost dry use a wide trowel over the surface of the ceiling. Now you are able to use your glossy paint to create whatever type of appeal you are looking for.
